When to start feeding baby solid

Question

So I read that baby can start as early as 4 month to start introduce solid food but that if they can sit up on there own and have good head control and I ask my daughter pediatrician about that he said yeah but we recommend 6 month but there babies that can start as early as 4 month and then I went to my Wic class appt and the lady say start feeding baby at 6m not 4m and I'm like confuse has any mom introduced solid at 4 months old?

Lots of people do it at four months (because that used to be the recommendation), but current science suggests that babies are safer and have better long term outcomes if you wait till six months.
I think waiting till six months is smart, based on what we currently know about baby digestion and how early feeding affects their bodies when they grow up (more stomach aches, higher rates of obesity, that kind of thing).
Also important is waiting until baby has the core strength to sit upright unassisted. If they need to lean on their hands or on a chair to sit, then they their core muscles aren't developed enough to gag effectively, which means their risk of choking is much higher than a baby who is strong enough to gag. So regardless of age, I'd definitely wait till baby can sit before starting foods!

The reason you aren’t getting a straight answer as to when to start is because some kids are ready earlier and others are ready later.
My anecdotes were not ready until 6 months or later.  We started offering food at 5 months to see if the interest was there and if there wasn’t, we would try again a week or two later.  My friend’s son was eating sandwiches at 4 months...which I couldn’t believe when I saw it.  If your kids are like mine, there really doesn’t have to be a rush to feed solids.  If your kids are like my friend’s there is no need to wait for 6 months if the interest is there.
If you watch the boards, you will see plenty of posts saying something like “My kid is 8 months and not eating solids”....so there isn’t a magic switch that flips at 6 months.  It is kind of a trial and error process.

They do recommend breast milk as the sole source of nutrition for *about* 6 months..so if your baby is ready a little before that it's okay to start trying little bits of things.

You can but I don’t think it is really recommended anymore. We started at 6 months.

You can introduce extremely watered down solids at 4 months, once your doctor gives you the ok though! You child has to be showing signs of readiness. Perhaps your doctor doesn’t see it. 
I see many people feed them solids before they get the ok from their doctor, and I just don’t personally think that’s a good idea. There is absolutely no reason to rush solids on your infant. They don’t need anything but breastmilk or formula until the age of one. Literally it’s just for fun. 
I started my child on oat cereal mixed with formula (so it was really watered down) at 4.5 months when I got the ok from my doctor. I actually got it at 4 months, but I decided to wait just a little longer. He did amazing with it. We have him about a teaspoon a day, AFTER his bottle. Remember, always after the bottle. It is more like dessert rather than a meal! :)
