Still remain friends

Ok I’m deciding that I think I may confess to my crush of a few years but I don’t know if she likes me. Has anyone confessed their feelings and they weren’t reciprocated but you stayed friends. Was it awkward after? I’m just trying to decide if this is a good idea.
