"MIL" suites?

Question

Anyone have any experience with having an in law living in a MIL suite on their property? 
My FIL offered to help us with a down payment if we find a house with some land that also has a "mil suite" or small apartment on the land so he could live there. My SO and I have been talking on and off about it and I'm not sure how to feel towards it. It's such a generous thing, but at the same time we both don't have the patience to have him that close.. We live 20 minutes away from him now, and we tend to go 2-3 weeks without seeing him for our own sanity. Looking for advice or any stories 🙃

Honestly I would just put less of a down payment. It’s not worth it if you already don’t see him for your own sanity. It is very generous of him, but the trade off doesn’t sound worth it.

Why does he want to live so close to you? Is he sick or dying? 
If you already dont like being around him very often it's probably not a good idea for him to be so close. More money wouldnt change my mind on that

Why not set rules? Only way I would do this though is if k had lots land and it wasn’t really close to my house. We’re looki g st house with like 5-18 acres of land though soOo I think I could make it happen on that lol
