Price of small tattoo too high?

Question

So my husband wants to get a semicolon tattoo in support/memory of his veteran brothers who he has lost to suicide and those who have survived.
He wants it over about an inch of space, though not a full square inch, if you get what I'm saying. 
He has been quoted over $100 and I think that's outrageous. He has two other tattoos that cover more than six inches with color and he paid about that much for those. 
Are we being cheap or is this overpriced?
We are in Florida (to get an idea of the cost area) Anyone know a reasonable tattooist in North or Central Florida?

It depends, some places have a minimum price regardless of size.

It totally depends on the shop. Some have a $30 minimum, others have $100 minimum. I personally go to shops that charge more because I know the quality is going to be better and the artists will be licensed. And keep in mind, they're charging you for the supplies as well as their time. You don't want them to use cheap ink or needles on your body.

That's over priced. My tattoo place charges $30 and gives $10 of it to a charity supporting suicide awareness. I'd have him check out other places.

Is he charging by the piece or by the time? I would say that's over priced either way. I could maybe understand d $100 if he goes off time. But always get a quote from other artist. I know people say if you want better quality you pay the money for it. But you can find damn good artist who wont rip you off.

Some shops have $100 minimum. Look around at a few more places but don’t settle for price over quality

I think it just depends on the artist/place. The shop down here has a 50$ min. The shop by my cousin has a 100$ min. It’s probably to protect the artist from having to do a bunch of tiny tattoos for really cheap but I’m just guessing.

My favourite tatto guy has a policy of minimum 150 swiss francs (chf) but he uses biological ink. I went big since the first time so it was worth it to me, but I see your point and find it completely valid.

Here it’s $60/hr with a minimum of $100. So you are paying at least $100 no matter what you get. Not including tip.
