Fur friend

Hi guys I’ve never owned a dog, had a cat when I was little. I was raised in Africa where most people keep dogs for safety, so they lock them up in the day and let them out in the evening to guard the house, so the dogs are vicious.. I was chased by dogs a few times and developed a serious fear for them. When I moved to America our family friend had a toy poodle, I used to be terrified of him but over time grew to love him.

I would love to own a dog. I’m getting out of an emotionally abusive relationship and for some reason I am wanting a friend.. I work from home and would love a fur friend.

Any suggestion what to do ? What dogs are small, friendly and easier to manage?
