Tested positive for group strep b.

I know it’s not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, but I’m still upset about it. Of course I read through doctor google about all the bad things that could happen. 😨

Has anyone’s doctor used this as a reason to induce early? I’m super paranoid now that if I go into labor naturally and it’s fast, I won’t get the antibiotics and then something will happen to the baby!

No doctor should recommend induction based on GBS positive. The only time it becomes potentially dangerous to baby is after your water breaks, which usually doesnt happen until after labor starts anyway. They'll give you antibiotics when you get to the hospital and its no biggie :)

If your labor is fast and you don’t get the antibiotics they will want the baby to stay in the hospital for 48 hours to make sure no fever or sign of infection starts. That’s all! It’s just extra observation time.

If you don’t get the full course of antibiotics (2 doses 4 hours apart) they will just give baby the antibiotics. Don’t worry if you think you might have a fast labor, and if you tell them you are beta positive they will admit you sooner to ensure you get the antibiotics

You should be fine. Even if it is fast. I’m also positive. My last labor was 5 hours.... yes nervous about this one but they monitor baby. Try not to stress about it.

I just had my baby. My labor was 4.5 hours and they got the meds in right away. It’s the first thing they do when you’re IV goes in.

My water started leaking so I headed to the hospital right away, I got there at 1:40am. By the time I made it out of triage, got the antibiotics and epidural (I was 5cm) it was 3:40am. My baby was born at 5:23 am. I didn’t get to finish the antibiotics and both baby and I had to stay an extra day at the hospital for monitoring, we were fine. It’s super rare to have any complications, about 1 in every 100k births. I was supposed to be induced at 39 weeks but baby came at 37 and 2 days.

I went into labor before they could get my group b strep test results back. They were supposed to get 4 bags of antibiotics in me before I had her just in case I tested positive. They only got 2 bags in before I had my daughter. If she had shown any signs of fever, or if my waters had been broken for longer ( my waters were only broken for an hour maximum) then they would have given her antibiotics. She didnt end up needing antibiotics, and 4 days after giving birth I found out I was group b strep negative anyways.

I get how you feel. I tested positive with my first pregnancy and cried like a baby! 😪 Ended up he came on his own at 41 weeks 5 days, no mention of induction until the 42 week mark. When my waters broke I had to go to the hospital and they popped a drip in and administered antibiotics, simple. They then tested baby after delivery. Please don't worry, it's quite common and the Dr's will take great care of you and baby.
