Question

So, I’m thinking of taking 1 month off before baby comes. That’s maternity leave ? Right? And then I get my other time separated for when the baby comes? Anyone can help me out. Trying to understand the best I can. I work for a School district too

In California you can get up to 4 weeks off before your due date and up to 6 weeks after. The 4 weeks is use it or lose it, if you don’t take it you can’t use it after baby is born. I’m only taking a week or so because I can’t afford to go on reduced wages (disability) for too long — check out the dept of labor and housing website for more info, it takes some research to fully understand.

You should be allowed 4 weeks prior (disability) and 6-8 weeks post birth (again disability). This is if you pay into CA state disability which depends on you and your employer though.

I also work for a school district in California and I will caution you to check with your Benefits department. Many school employees do NOT pay into state disability. If you do not have a back up insurance plan, you are going to lose out on pay. In my district we use ALL of our sick days to cover the sub, then once those are done we go into sub deduct, which means they pay the sub directly from your pay and take the rest for benefits payments. If there is anything left over it will get paid to you. If not, then you end up owing the district money OR you bring in a check to cover your benefits cost. Check how many days are considered a full school year as well. In my district you can only be gone for 45 days or you do not move up on pay scale next year and it is not considered a full year. Which will affect your retirement and benefits. Check on FMLA/Baby Bonding time. I don’t know when you’re due, but for me, to use the time it HAS to be 2 consecutive weeks together. So if I have my baby early this year I will be going back before school is over because I won’t have a full two weeks off before summer. If you have disability insurance, check if you qualify for payment and what plan you have. Many of them don’t pay out during summer or during breaks. Good luck!
