Canadian mamas when do we apply to maternity leave?

To my fellow Canadian moms, when do we apply for maternity leave? I am due June 8th, but I am planning for my last day of work to be May 17th because I work a fast paced job that involves an hour of travel to get to work. It is already getting to be too much! 
Do I apply to maternity leave on my last day of work? I am just curious as to when I can expect to start receiving maternity leave in terms of budgeting until then! Currently been on hold with service Canada for 20 minutes, so figured I’d ask here too lol!

You can apply the last day you work. They will need all your paperwork too, most jobs send your roe electronically. Are you going off on sick leave first? It takes almost a month to get your first pay. They do a one week waiting period that you do not get paid for. It depends how quick they can process your claim.

I applied for sick leave first starting at 19 weeks and now I am 37 weeks and my sick leave is finished 15 weeks and automatically started maternity leave. I recommend you apply for sick leave first that way you will get extra 15 weeks. You don’t have to be sick, just get your medical certificate from your doctor saying you are pregnant and are having back pains and stuff. That’s what I did
