Hitting in his "sleep" previously posted to wrong group.. Whoops!

Whenever I try and wake my husband up he yells and screams at me, cusses, and backhands me in the face. Today he hit me so hard that I couldn't catch my breath. I sat down on the floor by the bed and he just walked over me, used the restroom and went back to sleep. He insists that he has no memory of these things happening and it happens daily. What can I do to stop this? I'm scared. We have a daughter, what happens if she tries to wake him up? He says he doesn't remember, but is that really true? I don't know.
