Need Social Advice!

Liz

Okay ladies. I’m not the greatest socially. I’m kind of awkward and I don’t have a lot of friends and I often struggle to know what’s okay socially and what’s not. I think I may have pissed off a very old friend and I’m not sure which one of us is the jerk.

Here’s the background. I’m 34 and I’ve been friends with this girl since college. We were very close. We are still friends but it’s one of those friendships where we can go months or even years without much communication and then when we do talk again it’s like no time has passed at all. I love her.

She’s getting married 5/26 and I’m invited to the wedding. I’ll be 30 weeks pregnant which is not too appealing of a prospect but not an outright dealbreaker. My family is having a bday party for my dad that same weekend. My dad is 61, and his health is very bad. My relationship with my family is strained and I love 250 miles away from them for that reason. I love my dad very much and he’s very sick and I don’t get to see him more than a few times a year.

The date to RSVP for this wedding is 5/3. I get a text from my friend today wanting to know if I’m going. I hate these high pressure on the spot social situations but I decide to man up and be honest with her about what I’m struggling with. Her response seems to suggest she’s upset with me but it’s hard to know for sure. She knows I’m not lying about my dad. He’s been sick all my life. He’s very bad now. It’s not like he’s critical or anything but I just don’t know how many years I’ve got left with him. It really might not. E many.

What do you think? Is she mad or am I overthinking it? If she’s mad I’m not mad at her - I’ll feel bad for having upset my friend. Is my reason for being torn legit or am I being a terrible friend? Help me navigate this ladies, please. I’m so bad at this stuff.
