Neither of them are offensive but a lot of white people try to use “African American” to be more proper but it’s not really necessary. I prefer black because neither of my parents were born in Africa. I’m American.

Neither are offensive. There is a difference though. Not every black person is African American, like myself.

Idk man. I just try to avoid saying any terms like that about anyone because no matter what I say I get called/told I'm racist. I gave up trying to find politically correct terms and work around it. It's gone pretty well for the past 7 years. I got called racist for saying Hispanic once and it was pretty funny to me because I am Hispanic. Then I got called a white person as if it was a bad thing when I'm not, "Freakin white people" is what they said.

Both can be offensive depending on how they are said. “The Blacks” is offensive. Using African American as coded language for poor is also offensive. 
But when writing I use Black American. 
Personally I feel African American is a misnomer for me as a descendant of enslaved peoples. I am not African. Though I am definitely of the diaspora.

Personally, I hate the term African-American. I’m black and of Haitian descent. I’ve never been to Africa or even out of the country. What really irks me about it, though, is that they don’t do it for other races or ethnicities. They don’t call white people European-American. They don’t call Asian people Asian-American. And if they do, they are almost always referring to immigrants. I was born here. True African-Americans would be: Ilhan Omar, Trevor Noah, and Charlize Theron.

Neither but I don’t like when people equate black with African American. When you correct them they brush it off like “oh same thing”. There are other black people outside of America too
