Birth control

Recently I started birth control and me and my boyfriend have started having sex frequently without a condom. But my step sister told me that birth control doesn’t go into affect until after a month of using it but I looked it up and it said that if you take it 6 days after the start of your period then it starts working immediately and that’s what I did so I’m just confused. And I’m not sure if I could be pregnant or not. Any information or advice would be appreciated!!!
