Should felons have the right to vote?
Felony disenfranchisement has been a topic of a lot of the presidential town halls and many political debates.
Should convicted felons be restored the right to vote?
At this time in many jurisdictions of the US, convicted felons are stripped of their right to vote in elections, even after they have served their sentence. The specific conditions vary by state. If they do vote, it is not unusual for ex convicts to be arrested for voter fraud.
This practice has drawn a lot of criticism as it was enacted as part of a strategy in barring black citizens from voting and it does clearly and disproportionally affect black Americans. 1 in 13 black Americans are affected by this vs. 1 in 56 non-black Americans. It is estimated that over 6 million Americans are denied the right to vote due to felony disenfranchisement.
Many of our country's leaders have proposed allowing felons the right to vote even while incarcerated via absentee ballot (2 states currently allow this). Others have stated that they should be allowed to vote only upon release from prison. Some people I've spoken to say that they should never have the right to vote.
Do you support restoring the right to vote to all felons? Only some? And under what circumstances? Please explain!
