Questions for my black ladies on here

So...my boyfriend is from Africa. This morning we saw a meme about an mixed race actor of Caribbean decent. And my boyfriend said “but that doesn’t even make sense he’s not black”

Basically he said in africa they consider “black” those from Africa or with African ancestors. So they wouldn’t call dark skinned people from the Caribbean “black” unless they were afro-Caribbean.

I am white so I just wanted to ask of out curiosity how you categorize yourself and being “black”. Is it by skin colour or region or...I dunno.

Maybe I sound dumb but I jut like to be educated and hear some options and thoughts from various people!
