Adopting pitbulls from a shelter

I really want a dog and although I want a german Shepherd, I would like to take in a Pitbull because they have a terrible stigma attached to them. I’ve only been semi-close to one but he was the sweetest boy in the world. If anyone could tell me how it is to adopt one from a shelter, I would be very happy.
