Advice? How to find your style when starting art.

Hey guys I’ve wanted to start drawing some cute cartoon characters but I just can’t seem to find my style and what’s easiest for me? 
Any advice on how you get started??

Don’t try to find a style right away. Trust me, it won’t work and you will probably get stuck. What you should do is work on realism. Draw anatomy and figure out how things look in 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵. Once you can draw features in a realistic way, that’s when you can start experimenting and exaggerating in certain areas to figure out what you like. Look up artists on Instagram that you like and maybe add bits of their style into yours. It won’t happen right away. It took me two and a half years to even see a semblance of a style. It will happen naturally. Trying to force a style won’t end well. See

This was me trying to force a style onto myself, but I found artists on Instagram and YouTube and art tips on Pinterest and 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 told me to start with realism first. So I did

I gotta admit, I felt discouraged for a while because nothing looked right. But I trusted the professional artists I followed so I kept going and eventually my realism got 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥

So I was like 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙣 𝙞𝙢 𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙮𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙩. I experimented a lot and for a long time

I started seeing reoccurring patterns and a style was forming. I wasn’t doing it on purpose, it just 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥. My style is still a baby and still changing and it’s not the only way I draw either.

^those are my current style but I still love going back to my realism roots

I don’t mean to discourage you because I know how much feeling discouraged and having art block sucks, but 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 throw yourself straight into cartoony drawing. It won’t go well for you. Starting with realism will benefit you about 300x more. Trust me. But don’t get me wrong, drawing stupid cartoons every once in a while isn’t a bad thing, but don’t go and freak yourself out about a style. You’ll find it eventually. Experimentation! Try a bunch of different styles learn about how to draw them on YouTube and go at it and you will take pieces from the ones you like and make and that will become yours! Go on YouTube and watch a bunch of tutorials and pick stuff up!

I think the biggest thing to finding your style is to just to draw as much as you possibly can. Notice things that you seem to do naturally, and patterns that appear in your work. I also think it’s important to pay attention to the things that you encounter out in the world that really “hit” you. There are keys there about you and your taste that can help you figure out your own personal quirks when it comes to creating. It can also be helpful to hear what sticks out to other people in your work. Something you may not see could be very apparent to your audience, some quality that consistently shows up in whatever you make.
