Giving birth in handcuffs/alone
I haven’t seen this posted so let me know if it has and I can delete it 👍🏼 I just read an article this morning about a woman named Tammy Jackson being forced to give birth alone in a jail cell. She began complaining about contractions at 3 am and did not receive help until 10 am. The guards knew she was pregnant and specifically held her in that ward to be able to offer care for both her pregnancy and her mental illness. She also gave birth relatively around her expectancy date so it’s not like the birth was premature or unexpected. Obviously this is wrong because it can cause serious risk of infection and harm to the mother and newborn but it got me thinking about all the other stories I’ve read about people being forced to give birth in handcuffs. Is it EVER okay to force a woman to give birth in handcuffs or alone in a room? What if she is a known danger to others? If she is a known danger to others, is it more humane to use handcuffs or to be alone in a room? If these restraints should never be used, how should doctors and prison staff go about maintaining their safety?
