Can someone with domestic violence get joint custody?

Can someone with DV charges get joint custody of a child? And who’s had multiple restraining orders put on against them?

I had a restraining order against my ex for three years, he still received unsupervised visitation and overnights every other weekend.  With the stipulation that if he was drinking (even one beer) that the kids could call me / police and he voided his rights for that weekend.  — However, although my ex liked power and control, he didn’t actually want the kids, so they never once spent the night with him or ever really saw him.  
And ultimately my kids had their own attorney.  It was a mess.

If two people are in a custody battle for the child, the parent with all of those charges will probably not get custody, it looks really bad in court. They may settle for supervised visits if the one parent is concerned for child's wellbeing, or if the parent advocates for the person with DV charges and reassures that child is safe with that parent.

I know a man who had a restraining order and was arrested for beating his wife. He still got full custody because he broke the mom down so much the judge felt like she was mentally fucked up from his abuse and he wasn’t. Super sad story.

Really depends on the state.. in the state of Tennessee no they can not.

Sure. They even give custody to people who have a record of sex abuse or who abused their own kids. Court system is messed up.

My ex and I had 50/50 custody with me being the main parent (I made all major decisions for her). Unless he beat the child he will be granted visitation or 50/50 custody.

no gurantee but usually no or they will have to be supervised visits. depends on the judge, your lawyer etc.
