Do you/would you support mandatory voting?

In Australia, we have a federal election coming up, and for people over the age of 18 it’s mandatory to vote. If we don’t vote, we get a fine. This is the law for all state and federal elections. 
I know a lot of countries don’t have mandatory voting, the biggest one being the USA. How would you feel if it was introduced there?

I don’t agree with mandatory voting. Voting is a right here, not an obligation. Maybe it could be seen as an obligation to the community, but certainly not a legal one. It’s a right to note vote as much as it is a right to vote. If someone doesn’t like any of the candidates, I don’t think they should be forced to vote. Sometimes not voting can say a lot, too.

I support mandatory voting if and only if:
1. Election Day is a national holiday.
2. Vote-by-mail and early voting is extended.
3. We stop using "first past the post" voting and instead use ranked choice.
4. A spot for abstention or no-vote is included.

Absolutely not.  Voting is a right and we can choose whether or not we want to execute that right. And what, if you dont vote you go to jail? Pay fines?  Lets not give the govt more power, please.

It's complicated, i sorta like the idea,but most likely the least privileged people will be the ones getting the fines...
Also, maybe Plato was right about democracy not being super ideal due to the lack of knowledge or edication if the common man- a lot of people who don't know jack shit vote, and more would if it was mandatory, and perhaps people who don't invest time to learn about politics just should stay out.

No. My country is pretending not to be a rigged 2 party system as it is. This will just make it seem like we are all willing participants in that. It pushes us to keep voting for lesser evils, which keeps us voting for evils.

No if people don’t care or aren’t educated about their decisions then they shouldn’t be bothered to vote. I don’t want someone just going in blindly to vote and picking whichever name they see the most on signs.
