How soon is too soon to gather stuff?

Question

When did you first start gathering major items (car seat/crib/etc)? I’m only 15w so this stuff is totally off my radar, but a friend just posted an infant car seat for free on Facebook and it’s pretty tempting to ask for it, despite very intentionally not telling anyone we’re pregnant yet... What would you do?

We bought stuff as it went on sale once we had our 8 week scan. I wouldnt take a used car seat though

Never get a second hand car seat most manufacturers will suggest you replace it even in a minor accident... if it’s second hand, you can’t guarantee it hasn’t been in any kind of accident. Free isn’t always better. 
If your picking up second hand items make sure it’s things you can easily wash/disinfect because you have to keep in mind that people treat their “things” different then you. You never know if someone smokes in a home, has pets, doesn’t practice safe hygiene.
I know it sounds a little crazy but this is your baby and you have to be cautious.

I started buying clothes as soon as we found out the gender at 15 weeks but I haven't bought anything else because we live in a studio apartment and are moving when I'm 31 weeks. If we didn't have to move I would have started buying bigger stuff at 24 weeks.

The hubs has made the very valid point that we aren’t out of our miscarriage danger zone yet (I’m super high risk) and it would suck to have to deal with items that we aren’t able to use. So, I think I’ll wait until the dr tells us we can breathe a little easier.

I guess I started around 18 weeks... first we bought the bassinet, then the crib.. etc. I’m 26 weeks 1 day now, and have all of the major items purchased/ gifted to us except for the monitor.

I would take free stuff! Just be careful and make sure it is someone you trust. I got offered a free car seat and it expired before my due date even occurred. A lot of people who were giving me free stuff seemed to just use it as a way to get rid of stuff. I started buying stuff at 20 weeks after we found out gender!

If it’s free take it! I didn’t start buying big stuff until 26 weeks though.  But if it’s free take it! Also if you have a baby shower make sure that your guests are buying off a registry so you don’t have to worry about doubles
