How well do ovulation test work?

My husband and I are ttc baby number 3. I know with my last baby ovulation test never really got dark like they should of and this time around they were all negative. Is this normal? I'm having all the normal signs of ovulating but no positive test.

Maybe start temping so you know you definitely ovulated
