When cooking meats (not frying), do you add extra oil to it?

I cooked with my boyfriend for the first time Last night and found out that before he cooked his beef he adds vegetable oil to it. I told him that you didn’t have to add grease (oil) to it because the meat has its own oil and he seemed shocked..😂😂😂

I know there are some meats that you need to add extra stuff to, like chicken breast.

So now I’m curious if other people do it to not judging or anything because everyone has their own cooking style 😂 I just found it funny.
