Going for a PHD?

Question

I got yelled at for posting this in another group. So I’ll try again. Lol . My husband finally agreed to start trying to have kids, and I’m so excited! I’m 32 so I feel like it’s time. Though recently I started to get this itch of wanting my PHD. I currently teach kindergarten but I really want to be a college professor teaching soon to be teachers.  Has anyone had the experience of being a mom of little ones and going to school for a phd? If so, was it manageable? Or am I out of my mind? I definitely want kids and I feel due to my age, that needs to be a priority, but I also don’t want to push away my drive for this PHD and never get to it if I wait for my future kids to be older. Thanks!
Just to add, my husband has always been supportive of my dreams, and has always pushed me to go for the PHD, so I know he will stand by my decision if I wanted to go now.

I don’t have a PHD, but one of my old professors told us a story about him getting his. He graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree by the time he got married to his wife. But he REALLY wanted his PHD. Well, his wife got pregnant and they now have a little girl. And he started his PHD after she was born. Now, already having a full time job, he couldn’t just quit and go to school full time so instead he was working and doing school. 
And he said it was the worst decision he made. He missed out on a lot of his daughter’s first experiences and he wasn’t always there for his wife when he should have been. He said looking back on it, he should’ve stopped at a master’s. And that the PHD isn’t worth the amount of time and effort, unless you’re single and haven’t started a family yet. 
Now I don’t know your situation or it would be possible to work on your classes over the summer or breaks when you aren’t teaching, but he really regrets it. 
Where I live, at the community college you can teach education courses with only a master’s. I believe most community colleges take professors with only master’s degrees. Of course, fancy universities require PHDs. 
Unless you’re dead-set on having a PHD, I’d look into what would be needed to teach courses at your local community college. Or some bigger universities will let professors teach with only a master’s degree as an adjunct professor. I’d look into that before really dedicating many months to so much schoolwork while having a family.

I have a 2yo and I’m just starting a PhD. The advice I got was to do it while he is young before too many of his own school and extracurricular needs start adding up. There will be times of reward and struggle I figure. Go for it!!

Having kids will definitely make it longer to get it done.  I did three Masters degrees pregnant.  Two years later I still have two classes to do.

Look into an EdD! You can get those online and they still count as a doctoral degree. It’s gonna take time and a lot of effort but you can do it!
