Do you think my 8 month old understands what a “duck” is?
I laid out two of his animal toys, one was a duck and the other was a owl. I asked “where’s the duck” “duck” “duck” “duck” I kept saying it and then he reached and grabbed the duck. I was like okay that obviously was a coincidence.
So I tried it again, but this time with 3 animals, same thing...he reached for the duck! I started adding in more and more animals and rearranging them. But he kept choosing the duck. So I confused him a bit and asked where the cow was, he chose the horse lol.
He literally scans the toys back and forth with his eyes and then reaches for the duck.
Then he went down for a nap...
I just tried again, he kept going for the duck. Then when I asked where the chicken was he went for the duck, I asked where the horse was and he reached for the frog, then I asked where the cow was, he went for the duck. I’m now just wondering if the duck toys is his favourite? Or if he’s reaching for it or other toys when I ask where another animal is besides the duck because he doesn’t know any other animals yet.
I also say words to him and tell him what I’m doing, whenever I give him a toy I say what it is. He plays with duckies in his bath, so I’m wondering if he just knows what they are now because I say it so much, or if it’s all one big coincidence.
What do you think?
