Irregular contractions?

Question

I’m 38 + 2 and tonight have started having irregular but VERY painful contractions. And In between the contractions it’s hard to get comfortable, my hips and lower back hurts. 
Just wondering, should I go to the hospital? Or wait til they are more regular? I can hardly breathe though each one. I know they aren’t Braxton Hicks because I’ve had those just about every day since second trimester and they’ve never hurt like this. It’s like period cramps x 1000!
Advice please other than call my doc! FTM here.

UPDATE! I ended up going to the hospital just because of how intense they were and I’m glad I did! I was 3.5 cm dilated and admitted for labor!! Baby girl born today and we’re both exhausted but doing well!

Honestly, I would call the doctor first. I know that’s not the advice you wanna hear but it’s what you should do, even if they are irregular. My doctor told me to call if the cramps/contractions became very painful.

Not sure what your dr has told you about the contractions but here where i live they want the contractions to be every 5min and for you to be atleast 4cm dilated to be admitted good luck

I get painful contractions any time my body is low on water (even if I've been drinking a bunch) try chugging 24oz and waiting 15 min. If it doesn't go away after that, my Dr says to call.

You look like you’re progressing. 
Unfortunately as the others have said the best bet is to call your doctor and ask. Especially if they’re incredibly painful
