Baths post-partum?

Question

Are baths okay post-partum? The nurses at my hospital and my obgyn said that baths cause infections of the cervix that can go up to the uterus- but then what’s the point of a sitz bath? I’m extremely confused- are baths safe?

In the UK baths are recommended as part of the healing process. I had a bath a few hours after I’d given birth and been stitched back up and have had one nearly every day since I gave birth. I’m now nearly 9 weeks post partum and I’ve had no issues. X

My midwives had me get in the bath about 20 minutes after they were done stitching me to get cleaned up, I just kept my baths free of bubble bath and anything that could irritate me

Baths are Not safe until you are past your six months check up after Baby. They should have made an appointment with you so they can check and see if everything is healing properly down there. Having baths too soon after having a Baby can cause an infection and it isn't worth the risk. Sits baths different because you only fill up the tub so that your vag and butt touch the water. You can also add bath salts to help but I would call your OB or your nurses and see if they think sits are a good idea now before you do them. If you're uncomfortable and you're trying to get relief, you should try using Tucks Witch hazel pads and the blue can of dermoplast pain relieving spray. They were amazing and helped me through recovery after I had my son. You can find them in the first aid section in places like walmart, Walgreens, target, etc. Hope this helps :)

A sitz bath is like an inch of water - it's meant to bathe the outside without going up too far.
