At the moment we are trying to get into the habit of efficiently putting things away - if you are going upstairs you take a second and look around for something that actually belongs at your destination. And you take it with you and put it away.  And dealing with the mail immediately.

1. Never let it get too messy. There is nothing to clean if you out things where they belong immediately. Saves time too. 
2. Clean a section at a time and be done with it so you see progress instead of trying to fix everything at once and never getting done for hours, days or weeks!!!!
3. Sometimes, cleaning the floor does give the room a cleaner feel. 
4. Reduce the clutter. Too many things means more to clean and harder time pulling off a neat look. 
5. Storage spaces are a life saver. 
6. Arrange things according to need. What you need everyday should be accessible. What you need every week can be kept in storage spaces in house, what you need every season(eg winter) can be kept in the store room, and what you don't need for 2 years can be kept in the rubbish pit. 
7. Enjoy it. Makes it easier to clean if you know why you are cleaning. 
8. Let everyone in your home have the similar vision of keeping the home clean, otherwise you will just clean for them to mess up. Beats the purpose.

When I get into my depression episodes (could be for 3 days or for weeks and I don’t get out of bed) the house gets destroyed. What I do when I am able to clean if I shove everything on the floor into a pile and I sort it. Pick up any dishes and I pick up any toys or things that can’t be thrown away then I pick up big pieces of trash then I sweep. It works for me. For the counters I throw any trash on the floor. Put up anything that needs to be put in the pantry. Then dishes

If I have let my house go for a few days I like to clean in layers. Pick up all the trash, dishes,
Then all the random articles of clothing, then the toys. I find it eliminates the back and forth that really exhausts me during cleaning and I get more done.
