What’s the difference between the pill and the mini pill?

The mini pill contains progestin only. The combined pill contains progestin and oestrogen. The mini pill is used in people who are sensitive to oestrogen, have a higher risk of breast cancer, are prone to high blood pressure and for more reasons. The combined pill is far more commonly used. 
The minipill thickens cervical mucus and thins the uterline lining which prevents sperm from reaching the egg. The minipill also sometimes suppresses ovulation. 
Combination pills suppress ovulation which keeps your ovaries from releasing an egg. Combination pills also thicken cervical mucus and thin the lining of the uterus to keep sperm from joining the egg.
The mini pill is consistently taken throughout the month with no breaks. The combined pill is taken for 21 days with a 7 day break - during which you get a withdrawal bleed, your ‘period. However some women choose to start a new pack to skip their period.
