Dating ? Or are we in a relationship

We had the talk and he said it’s up to me to how to call us and he asked what do I think we are ? And I said I’m not sure and that’s why I asked him and he’s like I’d say we’re dating. And he asked me again how would I want to refer this as and I said can I call u my boyfriend and me your girlfriend and he’s like sure I’m fine with that but like I’m not 100% sure what this all means! What did he mean by we are dating as that can mean many things but he was ok about the boyfriend term so any insights ?
