We never let it get below $6000. And honestly, that isn't much. We plan on saving a lot more once he gets this promising new job that pays double than what he gets now.

We’re 23, with four cars (two of them we own, other two we’re paying monthly on still), renting our home, one dog, no kids, 8k in the bank.

My husband holds the money because I’m irresponsible. I hold my own money and usually buy my own and kids necessities while my husband pays for bills and other things. I usually always have less than $500 in my account because I have 2 kids and barely make $16000 a year

Obviously it takes time to save up, but it's recommended to have 3-6 months of living expenses in savings in case you lose your job or have an emergency. 
Most people don't actually have that much saved up, but that's what the financial advisors say to aim for.
