We did it in our son's room. We bought tester cans of paint and picked 6 different colors and just drew it out on the walls. We started with the lighter color and worked our way to the darkest.

If I were painting it, I’d start with painting the entire wall the lightest color then as another poster said work your way down. Use masking tape to outline the mountains. I would go mountain by mountain as you work your way down. Leaving plenty of time for paint to dry in between each mountain.
