Let’s say you work at a grocery store. A man approaches your register, reads your name tag and says your name as he greets you. You respond and begin ringing up his items. People do this all the time. It’s polite. It also feels like a more human interaction because they’re using your name. Don’t read into it.

A lot of middle aged men seemed to do this to me at my last job. I think it’s something they teach you to do with business fields. They’re attempting to be friendly, but to me it’s weird.

My father does this. He repeatedly verbalized someone’s name whilst speaking or engaging with them. It’s friendly and proper.

My husband is 100 percent like this. I used to get mad in the beginning as I thought he was flirting but he always checks peoples name tag and refer to them with their name as will even have a small conversation. Almost all the time when we are out: I’m used to it, so I’m going to say friendly not flirty

I always strike up a conversation during checkout unless I'm struggling to keep my toddlers from losing it and I'm busy with them. I just hate the awkward silence and it feels polite. I try to always compliment something also. Just something small to brighten their day. It doesn't matter if the cashier is a man or woman, young or old, gay or straight or whatever else. It isn't flirting. But that's me. I have been told I come across as very flirty even when I know I am definitely not flirting at all. So it could be that for some people it would be flirting.🤷‍♀️

I wouldn’t think anything of it honestly. A lot of people (especially from older generations) like knowing who they’re talking too so they state your name. But also, could it have been someone from corporate (if you’re a chain store)? When I worked retail we would have corporate members dress as customers come in and shop to make sure we were asking them if they needed help, were being friendly, etc... so they would obviously want to remember who they saw that day.
