What is the difference between midwife and an OBYGN..?

Which one would you chose? 
My mom had a midwife from my brother and sister and she loved her midwife and told me to have a midwife instead. Please someone explain to me?

A midwife is not a medical doctor. If there is an emergency they can’t really help you too much. A OBGYN is a medical doctor that can handle emergency situations. If you have to be rushed to a c section they can handle it.  I personally prefer a doctor but I know a lot of people seem to like midwives.

I’m not an expert, but I think midwifes are best suited for low risk/normal pregnancy’s.  A lot of women who choose to have a natural, unmedicated birth will choose a midwife. I’m considering a midwife this time around. OBs can be intimidating and not as flexible.

This is my second pregnancy. My first I had a doctor, had to have baby out by a certain time, could end up with some other doctor that was on call the day I went into labor, lots of tests, lots of ultrasounds. This time I have a midwife and am planning a homebirth after a-section. I’m also a birth doula and am much more educated on all things birth. There are a lot of things out there that control a doctor that don’t control midwives such as most doctors want you to have baby by 41 weeks some will go as far as 42 weeks. I’m a long gestator my midwife has no limits and has had many healthy babies born 42-44 weeks. Doctors tend to ultrasound more often which has been linked to finding more “wrong” such as a baby that’s too big we better induce. American college of gynecology and pediatrics states that you can’t accurately estimate weight of a baby interutero and that induction is not supported unless baby is estimated to be over 11 pounds. Midwifes don’t look for baby size. In my opinion midwifes have the freedom to support you and not scare women because a set of rules like obs. Unless for some reason I have a medical emergency I will never use an ob again nor will I birth in a hospital. Doctors have there place. It’s for fixing unhealthy people. Pregnancy is not an illness.

I’d go with a certified nurse midwife, they’re kind of in between. They take the time with you, don’t rush you, and are willing to help if you want to go more natural. My 1 experience with an ob/gyn was rushed, she was nice, but wanted me to go on a low carb diet at 38 weeks pregnant, and was more interested in getting things moving for her own schedule rather than letting my body be in charge of that. I’ve had a cnm 4 times, and enjoy them. They deliver in a hospital, and are under an ob/gyn in case you need surgery or something. It probably just depends on what you want. Do you want to go more natural and to try to stay away from interventions? Or are you okay being induced, or having the possibility of more interventions?

I've had a certified nurse midwife with my first and will again this pregnancy which is different than just a midwife...they are medically trained and can do most things a dr does except a c section....I prefer CNMs more than dr just because they are more personal and caring than most drs. Plus I'm kind of a hippy and midwives are more naturally minded.

I had a midwife in a hospital with doctors present if they were needed. Midwife doesn’t necessarily mean there are no doctors there, but you’d have to see what options you have based on where you are.

I wanted a midwife and a natural pain med free birth but I’m high risk with twins so I’ll have to go the doctor route

My mom is a midwife. She delivers baby all the time. In Poland the midwife delivers the baby always unless there is a big emergency that needs doctor’s attention. Idk how the states work.
