Can I get fired over this?

I started a new job exactly 2 months ago. It’s at a college in the admissions office. I’m in the call center, where I have to call potential students to get them to come to the college for an interview, basically a recruiter. However, ever since I started it’s been a lot harder to get people to come in than I thought.

When I first started I was extremely nervous & you could hear it in my voice on the phone. The admissions director gave me a script to follow. It had some questions I thought were too personal so I tried to just follow what everyone else was saying in the room. The director didn’t like that, so I just started to stick with the script.

To make a long story short, I started to make appointments for interviews which I was so happy about. However, no one is showing up. Students make an appointment, but never follow through. I make approximately 100 calls a day, 80% of those calls are either no answer, invalid or wrong phone numbers. 15% have already chose another college & 5% make the appointment but don’t show up. I keep saying I can’t force anyone to come in, I can only make an appointment. The director seems to disagree.

Other admissions counselors have told me that people make appointments all the time & don’t show up. But, for some reason the director is acting like people are not coming in due to me & the conversation I’m having with them on the phone.

The director said to me the other day that we were gonna have to see if this was the job for me, which I took as a threat. Idk what to do. I don’t want to lose my job because I need it, but idk how to get people to come in. What should I do?
