What should your 2 year old know??

Michelle • Baby 💗 born 6/11/17 & 💗 born 8/27/19

A general question on what a 2 year old should know at this age. What number should they be able to count to? How many colors should they know? Shapes? Animals? How many words/sentences/phrases? I know every child is different on their development. I’m just curious to what other moms are teaching their little toddlers right now? 🤷‍♀️

Google the ages and stages questionnaire for 24 months and you’ll get a good idea of where they should be developmentally. Idk that a 2 year old SHOULD know letters, numbers, colors etc but it’s great to work on them with your kiddo. My 2 y/o can count to 20, knows all his colors, shapes, letters, animals and talks in 5-6 word sentences most of the time. But, conversely, he’s not much of a climber and just barely falls in the “normal” range for large motor stuff. They all develop at their own rate and in their own way. If you’re concerned chat with your pediatrician ❤️

Mine counts to 10 (kind of haha), knows all his colors, starting to learn letters, and really starting to make sense when he talks. “Daddy watch me” was one sentence I was surprised about today. More people are understanding him now too so his words are getting clearer. I can tell he knows what he wants to say he just gets excited and goes so fast it’s hard to understand haha. He also “reads” books to me - like 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed he flips through the pages and kind of tells the story but obviously isn’t reading. Ummmm he also runs away from me now which isn’t what he should be doing butttttt what can ya do!? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh he knows tons of animals and animal sounds. As far as shapes we do circle (he can draw a circle), square, triangle, star, and heart.

My daughter can count 1-10 in English and Russian, say her abcs. She can identify all letters (upper case) and numbers 1-10 some going up to 20. She knows all her colors and shapes even odd ones like parallelogram, trapezoid, loves to sing nursery rhymes and kids songs. She is speaking clearly and sentences ranging from 3-10 words. She is now making associations for example the ball is red like Apple, can sort colors when she is feeling up to it. Loves the books where you can find pairs. She is super active and loves to be around other kids, play with her little people toys, and be read too. Now I am trying to work with her on counting individual objects, phonics, and lowercase letters; but right now she is not really into learning, maybe she’s on summer break 😂

It’s so variable at this age! My daughter can count to 20, but she usually counts to 12, then skips around to 18-20. I counted beyond 20 with her and I’ve caught her saying a few numbers beyond that as well. She can say her ABCs and is just starting to draw an A pretty accurately. She doodles a lot and tells me what she draws (big imagination!) and has been able to hold her markers/crayons using the tripod grasp for a few months now. She has full conversations using 6-10 word sentences, but I’ve stopped counting words at this point. She knows all of her shapes and colors. She asked questions constantly (who/what/where, but not many whys). She seems to know a few sight words and has an amazing memory. Her pediatrician believes she’s verbally gifted, though she’s too young to test. She is very independent with her play and enjoys puzzles and especially pretend play like playing house and doctor. She really likes playing pretend with her dolls and has conversations and she’s caring for them. “What’s that, baby? You have a pee pee diaper? Ok, I’ll change you. You want to go to the park? Ok, let’s go. You fell down and went boom? It’s ok baby. You want to go to bed? Ok, it’s bedtime.” Etc. Her new thing is quoting Donald Duck so she says “Hey! What’s the big idea?” and “this is ridiculous!” a lot. She will say or do anything more than a few times if it made us laugh. She’s definitely a little comedian! ☺️ With as advanced as she is with language, she seems to be a little behind physically. She’s taken swim lessons for a while so she can swim well and is strong, but doesn’t seem to want to explore as much as others. I think she stays away from things she thinks might be dangerous, like climbing or going down big slides. She also has no interest in potty training and dressing or undressing, which seems to be what most others her age are doing.
