My hospital wanted me to be at 4cm before administration of the epidural because it can slow down labor and you wouldn't want it too early because of that.

I watched my sister give birth and I was there from the moment of arrival and then a full day after the birth. They wouldn’t give her an epidural at an 8! She was at an 8 and they said “just give it a little more time” and she got the epidural at a 10. It did not even have time to hit, they gave her the epidural and then she was pushing. She was screaming for her mom, and she’s not close to her mom. (Different moms) so she was obviously in pain. I found out the hospital she delivered at had a notoriously shitty labor and delivery unit. I had a friend who had her baby there at 15 and she said they were shitty to her because of her age and she almost bled to death. They made her get up to go pee and could barely get up and she kept telling them “something is wrong with me I think I’m bleeding too much.” but they made her get up anyways and she was standing over the toilet and blood just came pouring out of her like a waterfall and she passed out on the toilet and she had to have a blood transfusion. Are you kidding. It took her passing out on the toilet for them to care for her properly?

Depends on hospital. Where I had my daughter, they wouldn't fully admit you until you were at least 4cm dilated (unless you were being induced or receiving a c-section) or your water was broken. Once you were admitted, you could have an epidural.

Not any hospital I've given birth at. They let me get it as soon as I was admitted. I was always around 4-5 cm by then.

I got an epidural at 1cm 🤷🏻‍♀️. They asked me. I was like “I can get it now?! Don’t I have to be 5?” And they said no at this hospital it’s whenever mom wants. Honestly I think it depends hospital to hospital. I was only 1cm and the contractions were soooo intense I couldn’t even speak. There were tears rolling down my face so I don’t regret getting it at all.
