Would you be mad if your husband put his mother as his beneficiary to his life insurance and 401k?

In my state, the spouse has to sign a release of they aren’t the main beneficiary.

My husband had his mom before we got married and changed it after we got married. He did however put her down as the contigent beneficary.

Did he have the job before they got married, and he just never updated it? Or were they married, then he got the job and put his mother down? 
I’d be upset either way, but if he had just forgot about updating it, I wouldn’t be as upset.

If it’s before you guys were married I would say he needs to update it. But if this is during the marriage he’s a idiot. And I would be highly upset. God forbid but what if something happens to him and now me and the kids (if you have children) have nothing cause your mom is the beneficiary make absolutely no sense.
