Is it better to be “down to earth” or “up in space”?

I’m pretty sure being “down to earth” means being level headed and aware of your surroundings and the consequences of your actions while “up in space” means airheaded and not understanding that everything you do has a consequence.. but I’m not sure.. I guess it really depends on your perception.
