Tampon help!

So I’m going camping soon and I might have my period that week. For some reason I haven’t been able to use tampons, I think it’s because the first time I tried it ended up getting stuck and hurting super bad (not enough blood). Does anyone have any tips on using tampons more easily? Every time I try I get scared that it will get stuck again and become painful.
