Toddler Independence

I just watched the movie Pihu on netflix about a 2 year old who was home alone for a whole day. It was pretty disturbing and probably not the best thing to watch just before bed... but it got me thinking... there's a balance between protecting toddlers and teaching them how to be independent. It really freaked me out, like what if something happened to me... how would my LO cope? Today, I taught her how to bring a cup up to the water cooler and fill it up herself.

What are some things you teach your toddlers so they learn to be independent and develop toward taking care of themselves as they grow?
