Is it cultural appropriation to name your child a culturally specific name if you aren't part of that culture?
Spin off of a post in another group asking if it's weird to name your child a name from another culture you aren't a part of/have a connection to. I personally think it's odd and maybe even cultural appropriation. But, in that group I seem to be in the minority. Curious about the opinions here.
For example, if you aren't Chinese or part of the Chinese culture but decide to name your child Zhang Wei. This can apply to any mix of cultures.
If you think a name sounds nice or like it for whatever reason, does it matter that it's strongly associated with a different culture? Is it being close minded to think that it's odd to choose a name from another culture since we're all just one big melting pot?
