TTC After Surrogacy

Erin

Okay. Long story.

I conceived my two daughters on the pill, by accident, when I was 20 and 21. After my 2nd daughter was born I got Mirena, which was awesome. 2 periods in 5 years.

Then 5 years ago I began a life changing journey of becoming a gestational surrogate. I got Mirena removed, started on the pill and a few months later began the IVF meds. Pregnant on our first cycle, carried twins to 37 weeks, no complications.

Back on the pill, and almost exactly a year after I delivered the twins, another IVF cycle and another time I was pregnant on the first try. After I delivered that baby (40+5 weeks) I decided I wanted a break from surrogacy and I opted for Mirena again. One period in a year.

THEN my agency reached out to me with what seemed like a perfect couple to carry a baby for. So, Mirena out, back on the pill, one IVF cycle and I was pregnant again.

This pregnancy was unfortunately full of complications. Placenta previa, my water broke at 24 weeks, 10 weeks on hospital bed rest, breech baby and my first c-section.

Back on the pill at my 6 week appt - but I was bleeding 3 weeks of every month on that pill. So we switched to something else and I didn’t have a period for 3 months on that pill. By that point I was over the hormones so I got off the pill in the hopes my cycle would regulate and then my husband and I could start trying for one more of our own.

The point of my story is that this is the first time I’ve ever tried to conceive naturally on purpose. While I always had a regular 28 day cycle basically my whole life when I wasn’t on Mirena, since I’ve been off the pill I’ve had average 35 day cycles. I was due to start today (if I was on a 28 day cycle) and I didn’t. But I’ve taken approx 12,000 pregnancy tests the last week (#kiddingnotkidding?) and they’re all negative. I didn’t try ovulation tests this month but I think I will next month.

I guess my question is - what suggestions do you have? Is it possible to conceive without medical intervention when your cycle is weird?

I’m afraid that all the crazy hormonal changes I’ve done to my body the last 10+ years is going to make conceiving naturally a challenge...
