Is it selfish to only have 1?

So somebody told me its selfish of me to only want one kid because theyll want a brother or sister to grow up with.

I have mixed feelings. I am an only child, and to be honest, it is really hard growing up without siblings. It’s hard cause you don’t have anyone, besides friend, who you can really share with. The truth is, the friends you grew up with usually don’t stay in your life after a certain age. So you don’t really have anyone to continuously grow with. Even recently, I went through a miscarriage, and I just kept wishing I had siblings I could reach out to. I know there is a possibility of not getting along with siblings though. Now, the reason I have mixed feelings is because my mom raised me as a single parent who wasn’t very proactive in showing me healthy activities and putting me out there to grow. My husband has 5 siblings, and they all love my nephews dearly. I didn’t really ever have that unconditional love from my mom’s brothers and sisters. So that is where I struggle cause I too only think Ivan have one kid due to fertility issues, but I really struggle because I know what I went through, but I do try and remind myself that my child would be in a totally different situation than what I was in... so there it is from an only child! Ultimately it’s up to you, and I do wish you the best.

I am an only child, I was never lonely and independent. My child will probably be an only child. Took me 3 years to get pregnant and had a traumatic birth. One and done.

I've had this said to me too, I don't think it's selfish at all. I always wanted more than one but my pregnancy was horrible, the end of the pregnancy and my sons premature birth and NICU stay were so traumatic I don't think I ever want to go through it again. My life was also in danger and I don't want the chance of leaving my son without a Mum. I'd rather him be an only child

I don’t find it selfish I grew up with my brothers and it was the same as growing up alone we didn’t have big age gaps too so just because your kid has a sibling dosent mean they will have a bond. Having a baby is a huge thing no matter if it’s the 1st 2nd 3rd ect it’s a big change in every way so to each their own

I said I only wanted one too then I watched him play alone and it made me sad so we decided on one more...  ow I’m on my 3rd and I know I’m done. No wanting one is not selfish, some will say they preferred growing up alone cause their parents weren’t broke, some will say they loved growing up with someone like me.

I’ve had the same reaction, I think as long as we don’t isolate our kids and make sure they have plenty of time and activities around other children then that’s fine. 
There are pros and cons to having one or multiple children and no way is better, but I know for my own situation that more than one child in our family would not give them the same quality of life that I want. Also sibilings aren’t a guarantee that you’ll have a best friend for life or the quality of your child’s life is any better. 
If you want 5 kids go for it,your body your life, but it’s unfair to say it’s selfish to have only one because no one knows what’s best for your life, body and mental health.
