Ready for food?

Question

In a 24 hours period my son typically has 40oz or a little bit more. 
He’ll be 4 months on the 16th July. Do you think maybe he’s ready to try baby rice?

baby rice has no nutritional value.. have you looked into baby led weaning? people generally start that around 6 months

No- eating a lot of milk is not a sign they are ready for foods.  Look for: ability to almost sit completely on own with very little support (this relates to gut maturity), ability to open mouth and keep tongue back/down when putting something in his mouth (if tongue thrust reflex happens- not ready), significant interest in what you are eating, and at the very least over 4 months.  6 months is generally when babies are developmentally ready.  Nutritionally milk is the most complete and ideal food for your baby the whole year, so there is no rush to displace it with food.  In terms of what to offer- no need to start with cereal but you certainly can.  Iron is the one nutrient that they run low on about that time if nursing, formula is loaded with it.  If you are nursing at least start with something that has iron (the reason most people do cereal, its easy), if your formula feeding start with whatever you want.  
I will wait until about 5.5-6 months, not in any rush.  In my opinion milk is way easier and way healthier until that point. B

If you have a formula fed baby then it is recommended to start at 4 months and a breastfed baby at 6 months. It is better to start with vegetables for the first month because they are easier to digest. Rice can be tried afterwards, but I would prefer coocked and mixed rice rather then cereal with no nutritional value.

We are in a similar situation. 
We’ve got a big boy 90th percentiles who’s very active (rolling, kicking like he wants to crawl, trying his hardest to army crawl) so he burns a lot of energy. 
He’s mad when he finishes a bottle but if we give him more formula he’s overfill and and spits up a lot. He used to mostly sleep through the night and now he’s up 1-3 times and hungry. I know some of it is the 4month regression but it seems he’s also mostly just hungry!  I’ve watched him soothe himself back to sleep on the video monitor so we know he can do it. 
Our pediatrician said we could start food  at 4 months and that we’d discuss at our 4 month appt but that’s not until next week due to the holiday.  She did mention she’d advise us to do fruits and veggies first due to him being constipated earlier when he was a newborn. 
So he’s 17 weeks tomorrow. And since that appt isn’t until next week we tried some Gerbers starter food apple sauce Sunday. He seemed to like it but only a few spoonfuls then he lost interest and was hungry so just protested until we got him a bottle. 
The last 2 nites we’ve tried my MILs suggestion and put some oatmeal in his bedtime bottle. 
Do what seems right to you and discuss with your next pediatrician appointment. 
Just go slowly on introducing foods in case baby reacts has been our plan.
