Pregnancy- would you donate your umbilical cord?
Never heard of this until I got pregnant!
What is umbilical cord donation?
-The blood in your baby’s placenta and umbilical cord is rich with stem cells. These stem cells can be used in stem cell transplants to save the life of someone with blood cancer or a blood disorder.
Usually, the placenta and umbilical cord are thrown away.
How does it work?
It’s a simple, safe, and swift procedure. Once your baby has been safely born, vaginally or by caesarean, the umbilical cord will be clamped as normal. Once the placenta has been delivered, one of our cord collectors will take your cord and placenta to a separate room to extract the blood.
It will then be transported to a cell therapy centre to make sure it’s suitable for transplant and then freeze it in their cord bank until it’s needed. If it’s not suitable for transplant it will be used for research
