Acne and birth control pill

Hi! I have kind of bad/pretty bad acne (I'm 17 so yay being a teen? Haha) and I've heard that birth control pill can help? Is this true and are the side effects and chemicals worth it? Thanks for any help!!! (And I'm not sexually active and don't plan to be if that makes a difference)
