Gunshot or firework?

How can I tell the difference?

In my area, no one does fireworks until it's dark. Right now it's still really bright out. What I just heard sounded a bit different than a firework, but I don't know. I could just be paranoid.

Last year, around this time, there were gunshots outside of my apartment building. Apparently it was a drug deal gone bad. The apartments across the street from mine are full of druggies, so you never know.

My husband is an officer and he said a lot if people use the 4th of July to try and get away with things, since people will assume it's fireworks.
