I have severe ADHD.
I also have not taken meds for it in 5 years, and have successfully found other ways to manage it. 
I suggest looking into the ADHD diet. There are certain foods that make it worse, and you'd be surprised at the difference just eliminating or minimizing his intake of these foods could make! 
Also look into essential oils for ADHD. I personally use Veviter and Spikenard in coconut oil and rub it on the base of my neck, down my spine, and on my wrists. Those help also.
It sounds crazy but honestly just these two things helped more than any medication they had me on.

Changes in personality and/or abusive behavior should not be a side effect of medication. It's either the wrong dose or wrong medication.

My husband has ADHD and sometimes it more his concentration and other days its his mood i have begged him to get on medication and he refuses im almost at my wits with it how do you deal with you SO on medication ?

My wife has adhd and hasn't been on her medicine for a couple months because insurance issues but when December comes she will be back on it. The worst effect is her sex drive decreases to nonexistent which her being off of it has been wonderful! But she needs it and we work everything out andn talk it out

Does he have a psychiatrist? I have ADHD myself and it has put major strain on my relationship in the past. I was incredibly depressed and it seemed every medication I tried had horrible side effects. Finally I switched my psychiatrist and was diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar disorder, then was put on a proper medication. I was told the two disorders many times go hand-in-hand, but one or the other remains undiagnosed. Also, ADHD medications can send someone with Bipolar Disorder into severe manic or depressive epidsodes. A great psychiatrist and proper medication can make a world of difference.  Until that happened, however, I had to explain to my SO exactly what was happening with me and inside my head. I realized that he had absolutely no idea what ADHD really was or how it affected my daily life. We worked out a system where if I was having irrational mood swings (or any other odd behavior), he would tell me in the nicest way he could so it was brought to my attention and I could try to control myself better. Loving someone with ADHD takes a whole lot of patience.

My husband was on wellbutrin and started getting depressed and having suicidal thoughts. So he went off it and they started him on effexor. It had a much better impact on him emotionally. I woukd look into a different medication for the ADHD.
