Cats and Fertility

Okay ladies. This is gonna sound super stupid and I am sorry in advance, but I am dumbfounded.

Have you heard this: Cats cause infertility/sterilization in humans.

I’ve wanted a cat for months, got one and my weird grandma called me crying cuz she and my aunt heard this somewhere so clearly it must be true 🙄 I’ve never been more pissed.

Has anyone else ever heard this? Is there actually some validity to this because this is stupid. My dad and I just need laughing because we think this is stupid af. But has anyone heard this? Is this where the “cat lady” term comes from? Ugh.

Cats have nothing to do with fertility. Perhaps they are confused with the fact that once you are pregnant, you should avoid scooping the litter box if possible due to the potential for toxoplasmosis. Even then, if it is cleaned every day, it's not really a concern. Wearing gloves while you scoop is sufficient.

Just the cat litter you don’t supposed to change while pregnant the cat can’t mess with fertility

having a cat has nothing to do with infertility. I got pregnant the first month of trying, had a cat all my life. This pregnancy i was pregnant by month 2 if trying, still have my cat. He sleeps with us and everything lol. The term cat lady is just someone with a bunch if cats, nothing to do with kids.

Over 50% of my family/friends have had a cat or 2 in their home while they got pregnant. I had 2 for at least a year before I got pregnant

No. Cats can cause toxoplasmosis from eating raw animals infested with the parasite and you can contract it from cleaning the litter box and not washing your hands and putting your fingers in your mouth. The parasite contracted before pregnancy causes cysts throughout your body and you are then immune for life. While pregnant, your child will contract it and it can cause problems of a large variety ranging from bad to unnoticeable. Just wash your hands and up to your elbows after messing with your cat litter. If you've always been a cat person or had cats since you were a child, you probably already have it. You're fine. It can't grow further than a cyst in human bodies.
