Is this racist?

I recently had a classmate come into school wearing a confederate flag on their shirt and they were asked to cover it up or change because it is offensive. I personally agree with the adminstration of my schools decision with this as did many other people. The person did so, he went home and changed, but not after sounding off about how wearing the confederate flag was his right, as it is and it symbolizes the history of the south which he is proud of.

He is your textbook yee haw republican and is a very far right individual and when I asked him why he didn't see the issue with wearing it, because to many people it symbolizes racism, slavery, and a way darker time in american history, he essentially said I was a stupid sjw snowflake who can't handle other people's views on racism that dont apply to me.

I come from an affluent black family who lives in a predominantly white, gated community. When we first moved in, we had our share of microaggressions and racism so idk where he got that.

Anyways, my question here is, do you Gus think the confederate flag represents racism and negative things in our society or is it just a nice reminder of the history of the south, which ig he is entitled to be proud of? Was myself and others wrong to be offended? Was my administration wrong for asking that he change?
